A finely ground powder from the leaves of specially grown green tea leaves, matcha has been used for centuries in Japanese tea ceremonies. Nowadays, in Western culture, matcha is increasingly celebrated for its many health benefits, due to its high antioxidant levels.
With its vibrant green hue and distinct flavour profile, matcha is a versatile ingredient that shines in a variety of beverages, with the iced matcha latte being a particularly popular choice, especially during warmer months.
What is an Iced Matcha Latte?
An iced matcha latte is essentially the same as a traditional matcha latte but with cold milk and ice! Taste-wise, it’s a harmonious blend of earthy matcha and creamy goodness that promises to tantalise your taste buds and invigorate your spirit, with a dose of slow-release caffeine to give you a strong start to your day or a perfect afternoon pick-me-up.
How to Make an Iced Matcha Latte at Home
You’ll be pleased to know that making an iced matcha latte at home is pretty simple, especially if you already making hot matcha lattes. With just a few simple ingredients and a touch of creativity, you’ll be well on your way to enjoying this refreshing treat whenever the mood strikes. So, here’s what you’ll need to make the perfect iced matcha latte.
Ingredients:
Matcha Powder
The star of the show, matcha powder lends its vibrant colour and distinct flavour to the latte. Opt for organic ceremonial-grade matcha for the best results. The greener the better for lattes! Rest assured that all our Matcha Latte blends at Sweet Revolution are of the highest quality, organic and dairy, nut, soya and gluten-free.
Milk (Dairy or Non-Dairy)
Choose your preferred milk base for your iced matcha latte, whether it’s dairy milk, almond milk, oat milk, or any other plant-based alternative. All taste great within an iced matcha latte, each imparting its unique taste and texture to the latte.
Sweetener (Optional)
Depending on your taste, you may choose to add a sweetener such as honey, maple syrup, or flavoured syrup like vanilla to your iced matcha latte. You can adjust the sweetness to suit your liking. All our Matcha Latte blends contain a hint of Madagascar vanilla and unrefined coconut nectar to create a truly special and delicious iced matcha latte.
Ice Cubes
Ice cubes are an essential part of an iced matcha latte and create that refreshing chill factor. Ice cubes help to cool down the latte and maintain its refreshing appeal, especially in warm weather!
Flavourings (Optional)
With the growing popularity of iced matcha lattes, many are experimenting with adding new and exciting flavours to their iced drinks. Adding blueberry or strawberry syrup is a fun way to get creative with your iced matcha lattes, creating an iced blueberry matcha latte or an iced strawberry matcha latte.
Equipment:
Here’s the equipment you’ll need to make your iced ombre effect matcha latte:
Matcha Whisk or Frother
To ensure a smooth and creamy texture, a matcha whisk or frother comes in handy for blending the matcha powder with the milk.
Glass or Mason Jar.
Instructions
There are a few different ways to make an iced matcha latte. However, in order to create the beautifully aesthetic ombre effect that has become so popular recently, follow these instructions to create your own particular flavour.
1. Prepare the Matcha
If you’re using a pure Matcha powder, start by sifting 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into a small cup or bowl. Add a small amount of warm water, enough that allows for the matcha to be mixed smoothly without any lumps. Use your whisk or frother to whisk together the matcha until there is a small layer of froth on top.
2. Add Sweetener (if desired)
If you prefer a sweeter matcha latte, now is the time to add your chosen sweetener. Begin by adding a small amount to your matcha mixture and adjust to taste. Whisk it a bit more to ensure it is combined.
3. Add Milk & Ice
In your chosen blender or mason jar, add a couple of ice cubes and pour in your preferred milk, leaving enough space to add your matcha mixture.
4. Pour the Matcha Over the Milk
Now is the fun bit! Carefully pour the matcha mixture over the ice and milk in your glass or mason jar. Watch how the vibrant green of the matcha slowly mixes with the milk to create a beautiful ombre effect.
5. Stir & Drink
Use a spoon or straw to stir your iced matcha latte to combine the matcha and milk to create a perfect iced matcha latte. Now, sit back and enjoy your iced beverage!
