WHAT IS MUSHROOM COFFEE?

Many of us turn to coffee daily, whether it’s to kickstart our morning or as an afternoon pick-me-up. But have you ever heard of mushroom coffee? A new player in the coffee and wellness industry, it may sound like an unlikely pairing, but it is thought to hold many health benefits. Keep reading as we dive into the world of these ‘shroom coffees’ and answer the big question, ‘What is mushroom coffee?’.

What Exactly is Mushroom Coffee?

Mushroom coffee is essentially real, traditional coffee that has been blended with extracts of medicinal mushrooms, such as Chaga, Reishi and Lion’s Mane being the most commonly found in mushroom coffee. These mushrooms are considered somewhat of a superfood in recent years but have actually been used throughout history within more traditional medicine practises like Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, which have embraced their medicinal and health benefits for centuries. Becoming ever more popular, the mushroom coffee market is predicted to grow with a CAGR of 6% by 2032

The Power of Mushrooms

It’s important to note that not just any mushrooms are used within mushroom coffee. Although all edible types of mushrooms hold nutritional value, it’s the medicinal mushrooms that are especially prized for their health-supporting superpowers.

Here are the three mushrooms we use within our Shroom Coffee blend and are commonly found within mushroom coffees. Each has its own benefits and are known adaptogens, a unique group of phytonutrients that help the body adjust to stressful circumstances.

Chaga

Chaga is often referred to as the ‘King of the Medicinal Mushrooms’. This is because it is considered one of the most powerful antioxidants in the world! Antioxidants help to fight inflammation in the body and the Chaga mushroom is also particularly high in a compound called super-oxide dismutase (SOD). This enzyme can reduce the damage done to cells from ‘superoxide’, one of the most common free radicals in the body. Damage from free radicals can contribute towards illnesses and ageing. Studies have shown that SOD can act as a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, making Chaga a great addition to mushroom coffee.

Reishi

Know as the ‘Mushroom of Immortality’, Reishi is one of the oldest mushrooms to be used therapeutically within traditional medicine, due to its immune-boosting properties. Reishi mushrooms contain hundreds of biologically active molecules which help to promote the immune system. One of these compounds is called Ganoderma Lucidum Peptide which is thought to be responsible for Reishi’s potent antioxidant capacity. This powerful mushroom also has steroid-like anti-inflammatory compounds that inhibit histamine, the chemical responsible for allergic reactions, giving it the potential to decrease the symptoms of allergies with its natural anti-histamine properties.

Reishi is also thought to help reduce stress, promote relaxation and support sleep quality, making it another great ingredient for mushroom coffee.

Lion’s Mane

This powerful mushroom is celebrated for its natural cognitive benefits, with the ability to enhance memory, focus and concentration. Among its active ingredients are cyathane derivatives, hericenones & erinacines, which are types of special compounds that act as nerve growth factors (NGF), which is crucial for the overall health of the central nervous systems as well as for stimulating the growth of brain cells. If you’re seeking mental clarity from your morning coffee, a mushroom coffee that contains Lion’s Mane could be for you.

Why Choose Mushroom Coffee Over Normal Coffee?

Although coffee with mushrooms may seem unconventional, the added health benefits of the medicine mushrooms can elevate your regular coffee, providing valuable health benefits without impacting the rich flavour of coffee that we all love. Drinking mushroom coffee can also help minimise the potential drawbacks of traditional coffee such as acidity and caffeine jitters followed by a crash in energy, but will still give you a boost of energy for when you need it most.

The Benefits of Mushroom Coffee

There are many benefits of mushroom coffee, here are a few:

  • A lift of caffeine without the jitters
  • High in beta-glucans – one of the most potent and healing polysaccharides known that acts to activate the immune system.
  • High in antioxidants
  • Rich in adaptogens – which help the body to adjust to stressful circumstances like extreme temperatures, infections or other trauma.
  • Improve brain function & concentration
  • Improve overall wellbeing
  • Helps achieve mental clarity
  • Boost immunity

What Does Mushroom Coffee Taste Like?

You may be wondering what mushroom coffee tastes like and if it is similar to a normal coffee. Truth is, the mushrooms won’t have a particularly strong flavour and therefore overall your mushroom coffee will taste like coffee, not mushrooms! You may find it has a slight earthiness to it, which creates a well-balanced drink that complements the rich, bold taste of the coffee. Every mushroom coffee blend will differ depending on the coffee beans used and the ratio of mushrooms added.

Our Shroom Coffee mix is made up of 76% organic Columbian Arabica coffee and a mixture of high-quality Organic Lion’s Mane, Reishi and Chaga Mushroom extracts, as well as a pinch of pink Himalayan salt. Many of our customers say they prefer it to regular coffee!

How to Make a Mushroom Coffee

Making a mushroom coffee is surprisingly easy and just as simple as making a regular cup of coffee.

  1. You’ll first need to get your hands on a mushroom blend. You could either purchase a mushroom blend that solely contains a powered mix of your chosen mushrooms which you can then add to your coffee, or buy a mushroom coffee blend which has already combined the coffee and mushrooms for you.
  2. Using a mushroom coffee blend is the easiest and quickest way to make a mushroom coffee. All you need to do is add hot water, just the same as if you were making an instant coffee.
  3. You can also add milk and sweetener depending on your preference.
