In this blog post, we will answer this question, delving into its origins, ingredients, caffeine levels and the potential health benefits a chai latte can have. We will even tell you how you can make your very own at home. Keep reading to find out more.

What is a Chai Latte?

The chai latte is a warm milky beverage made using chai, an age-old Indian tea. Known for its delicious creamy texture and aromatic spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, the chai latte combines the spiced chai with warm steamed milk. This makes a chai latte the perfect alternative to a hot chocolate or a traditional coffee.

A History of Chai

Chai is steeped in a rich history, and with claims dating back more than 5,000 years there is a lot to uncover. ‘Chai’ is the Hindi word for ‘tea’ and refers to a mix of spices that form the basis of a tea-like beverage. Indian tradition holds chai as a healing drink, one that was used to treat the king in Indian legend. This spiced drink gained popularity across India and later became popular in Western cultures and society, leaving us with the chai latte that we know and love.

What Ingredients Are in a Chai Latte?

As mentioned, a chai latte contains a delicious mix of aromatic spices, in particular, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, ginger, cloves and black pepper. All of these spices give the chai latte its distinctive, aromatic flavour and can be brewed in water or ground down to create a chai powder. The brewed chai or chai powder is then combined with warm steamed milk, dairy or plant-based (both work a treat)to create a delicious chai latte.

Does a Chai Latte Contain Caffeine?

Chai lattes often contain black tea, meaning many of them contain caffeine. However, in comparison to coffee, it is a very low level which means chai lattes don’t tend to have the same effects that traditionally caffeinated drinks do. However, not all chai lattes include black tea. For example, our organic chai latte blends contain no black tea, making it the perfect caffeine-free alternative! If you are ever unsure, look out for whether black tea is listed on the ingredients list.

Is a Chai latte Good for You?

The delicious and creamy taste of a chai latte often leaves you wondering whether it really is good for you. However, chai has numerous health benefits which is great news for our fellow chai-lovers.

The Benefits of Drinking Chai Lattes

Chai lattes are not only known for being a delicious warm beverage packed with flavour but actually have several other benefits

Rich in Antioxidants

Chai lattes are commonly known for the abundance of antioxidants found in them. These antioxidants are said to promote cellular growth and some say these can prevent degenerative diseases. These antioxidants can be found in cinnamon, cardamon, and other cloves, or if your chai latte contains black tea, this can be a further strong source of antioxidants.

Anti-Inflammatory

A number of the spices found in a chai latte, such as ginger and cloves have anti-inflammatory properties, making chai a potentially helpful drink in reducing inflammation in the body.

Improved Sleep

When consumed before bed, chai lattes can aid in restful sleep. The aromas of the spices found in chai lattes can have a calming effect on both the mind and the body.

Stress Relief

An extra ingredient found in our chai lattes at Sweet Revolution is Reishi, a medicinal mushroom and known adaptogen, which has both immuno-boosting and stress-relieving properties

How to Maximise the Benefits of Chai Lattes?

To maximise the benefits of chai lattes, we recommend considering the following tips:

Use High-Quality Ingredients

When looking to buy chai blends, we would recommend opting for an organic chai. This will ensure high-quality tea leaves and fresh spices have been used, meaning you are getting maximum nutritional value and the very best flavours.

Make Them a Daily Ritual

Whilst each chai latte has the potential to provide you with all of these benefits, the best way to reap the benefits is by incorporating chai lattes into your daily routine, making them a staple beverage.

Try Different Chai Forms

Chai blends vary greatly, and each can affect the efficacy of these health benefits. Some even have added ingredients for even more health benefits, such as our Blue Chai Latte with Spirulina, which contains phycocyanin, a compound high in antioxidants. When choosing a chai blend, one thing we recommend is looking for one without refined sugars.
