What is a Beetroot Latte?

The beetroot latte is the new drink on the block with a vibrant pink colour.  Packed full of health benefits, it’s no wonder they’re becoming the drink of the moment. But what is a beetroot latte? Can you make them at home and what is so good about them? In this blog post, we take a look at this pink powerhouse and reveal all.

What’s in a Beetroot Latte?

Beetroot lattes are full of nutritional value. Made up of fresh beetroot juice or beetroot juice powder which is then combined with either steamed dairy or non-dairy milk to create a creamy yet refreshing latte drink. A sprinkle of spice is also added for a yummy, warming touch.

In our Sweet Revolution Beetroot Latte Blends, we combine beetroot juice powder with unrefined coconut nectar, a little raw cacao powder and a touch of ginger for a delicious brew.

Why Beetroot?

You may be wondering why beetroot is being put in lattes. After all, adding vegetables to a latte doesn’t sound particularly appetising. However, the use of beetroot can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks, who first cultivated beetroot and used it as an offering to Apollo, the Sun God, within the temple of Delphi, located in central Greece.

Nowadays, beetroot is used as a natural food colouring, due to its impressive pink colour and is commonly used in Eastern European and Nordic cooking.

When it comes to the health and fitness space, many professional athletes consume beetroot juice before competing to enhance their performance. Research shows that the nitrates within beetroots improve power, endurance, and recovery. Even if you’re not an athlete, these nitrates can help lower blood pressure and protect the heart.

Is a Beetroot Latte Good for You?

Beetroots are naturally low in fat and can be considered somewhat of a superfood. A beetroot latte is therefore a nutritious drink that can become a beautiful everyday ritual. Not only does it taste great, but also holds many health benefits too. Here are some of the benefits.

Improve Athletic Performance

The high nitrate content in beetroot lattes can help improve athletic performance as more oxygen is brought into the muscles leading to great efficiency.

High in Antioxidants

When ginger is added to a beetroot latte, it increases its antioxidant levels. This is because ginger is loaded with antioxidants which are compounds that help prevent stress and damage on the body’s DNA.

Beetroots are also high in antioxidants. Betalains are responsible for beetroots’ vibrant colour, and due to their high levels of these, beetroots have been ranked as one of the top 10 antioxidant vegetables.

Support Gut Health

Rich in sources of glutamine, an amino acid that is essential in the health and maintenance of the gut, beetroots are a great way to support good gut health.

Helps Lower Blood Pressure

The high nitrate content in beetroot lattes helps to boost the levels of nitric oxide in the body, by opening up the blood vessels, increasing blood flow and therefore helping to lower blood pressure.

High in Vitamins & Minerals

A beetroot latte is packed full of amazing vitamins and minerals, such as plant-based iron, potassium, Vitamin C and B12.

What Does a Beetroot Latte Taste Like?

A beetroot latte is much more delicious than you may think. Due to the creaminess of the steamed milk and the added spices, the taste of the beetroot is very delicate. With added ginger, a lovely warmth is given which acts as the perfect boost to your day.

The beauty of a beetroot latte is that you can experiment with different types of milk and plant-based alternatives for a slightly different-tasting beetroot drink. For example, using coconut milk can create a really delicious flavour whereas almond milk can bring a delightful touch of nuttiness.

Making a Beetroot Latte at Home

Some may claim that making a beetroot latte at home can be a messy job. This is often if fresh beetroot juice is used. However, using a beetroot latte blend is a sure way to easily make a delicious and nutritious beetroot latte at home. Here’s how:

  1. Add about 2 tbs of your beetroot latte blend to your favourite mug, and mix with a little hot water so that all the powder has dissolved and you’re left with a smooth mixture.
  2. Next, steam or heat your milk. You can do this in a saucepan over low heat, or alternatively, a milk frother will help create a wonderfully creamy beetroot latte.
  3. Once hot, add your milk to the beetroot powder mixture, give it a stir and enjoy!

Our Sweet Revolution beetroot latte blends are mixed with a touch of ginger, a little raw cacao powder and a little unrefined coconut nectar, meaning you don’t need to add any additional spices or sweetener.

When is the Best Time to Drink a Beetroot Latte?

There is no right or wrong time to drink a beetroot latte and you don’t need to worry about consuming one close to bedtime as its high levels of nitrates can actually aid sleep. Many people also choose to enjoy their beetroot latte first thing in the morning, as a wonderful alternative to a traditional coffee, to ‘wake up their body’.

If you’re consuming beetroot for exercise performance, you’ll need to take it 2-3 hours before your activity.
